steve pooke November 27, 2016 Reply Thanks a lot for this article. Pretty slow going. Install SP 3 manually. I finally did a Ctrl+Alt+Del & chose Task Manager & with some fiddling brought things back to life.

Resolved - although the 'checking for updates' stage is very, very slow. Windows Xp Windows Update Not Working Any help would be greatly appreciated..Also, please keep in mind that my computer skills are average at best..Thanking everyone in advance for their time and patience. But that's sorta like piping your error messages to "Dev Null", they're not really gone & solved, you just can't seem'em anymore. And Windows XP was darn flakey.

The combination of the the two updates recommended here, and the "Windows Update Diagnostic" finally allowed me to run the normal automatic Windows Update. The system returned: (22) Invalid argument The remote host or network may be down. A case like this could easily cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
