I was getting conflicts with my video driver so my display reverted to 640x480. I'll give it a bit longer to conclude that it is though. If I remove the update, will XP Most Likely let me install it again? I too had to change from Multiproccessor free to checked.
Pretty slow going. I was able to download & install updates manually too. Anyway, I THINK things are finally working the way they should I guess I'll see if any other updates keep showing up. I re-ran it, then chose another option & kept poking around until I found something appropriate for windows update.

A Microsoft technician responded to my plea for help well within their 24 hour goal. I had to change it from "Multiprocessor Free" to "Checked" to get it to work. Microsoft's first suggestion was to download version 3 of the Windows Update "Agent" (file WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe) to the root of the C disk, then run it with Start -> Run and the http://webjak.net/windows-update/disable-windows-update-service-windows-7.html So I did & rebooted. But you can spoof Windows updates in order to install retail bits on checked builds and vice versa. Report Melindark- Nov 14, 2013 09:12AM Steps I had to take: Install IE8 Turn off Automatic Updates Restart to Safe Mode (F8) Rename Software Distribution to Software Distribution 2 Restart normally. On both computers, this fixed the problem. William oddly enough, I had to set it to Checked to make it work, thanks for the help though! NO BITS.
When I go to remove the update Windows has fit & shows me list of almost everything installed on the system & says if I remove this update, The world will There is a big x over the automatic updates shield. I am sure you know what they are too.for what its worth this worked for me.
